“We’re Here All Year” at Like Our Own Home
While March may be the official month of awareness, at Like Our Own Home, awareness looks like something much quieter.
It looks like breakfast at the kitchen table. It looks like someone choosing the color of their bedroom walls, it looks like a support professional sitting on the couch, helping plan out the week ahead.
Each March, communities recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month — first proclaimed in 1987 by President Ronald Reagan. The 2025 theme, “We’re Here All Year,” reminds us that inclusion, dignity, and accessibility are not seasonal efforts.
They happen at home. Every single day.
And for us, home is where everything begins.
Home First, Always
There is a difference between providing care and creating a home.
A homecare setup isn’t just about meeting needs. It’s about building an environment where individuals feel safe, valued, and empowered to live life on their terms.
At Like Our Own Home, that means:
Residents help choose their room décor
Meals reflect personal preferences, not fixed menus
Daily schedules are shaped around individual goals
Living spaces feel warm and familiar — not clinical
The foundation of inclusion starts inside the home. When someone feels secure and respected in their living space, they are more confident stepping into the world beyond it.
A Morning in Our Home
The day begins in the kitchen. Someone is pouring cereal. Another is scrambling eggs. There’s conversation about upcoming appointments, work shifts, or weekend plans.
Support professionals aren’t directing life — they’re supporting it.
They assist where needed, encourage independence where possible, and ensure each person has the tools to succeed. The goal isn’t control. It’s confidence.
In a strong homecare setup, routines are predictable but flexible. Support is steady but empowering. The atmosphere feels calm, not institutional.
That stability is what allows residents to grow.
Personalized Support, Not One-Size-Fits-All
No two individuals are alike — and neither are their support plans.
Homecare at Like Our Own Home is built around personalization:
Some residents need help organizing medications.
Others need transportation coordination.
Some want support practicing life skills like budgeting or cooking.
Others focus on employment goals or community engagement.
Our team adapts to the person — not the other way around.
Inclusion begins with listening. When someone’s voice shapes their own daily life, that is empowerment in action.
The Role of the Support Professional
In a homecare environment, support professionals are part of daily life — but never the center of it.
They are there to:
Encourage independence
Provide safety and guidance
Build trust
Celebrate progress
The best homecare setup feels natural. It feels like partnership.
There’s laughter in the living room. Shared responsibilities in the kitchen. Planning sessions around the dining table. The rhythm of life flows like any other household — just with intentional support woven in.
That’s what “We’re Here All Year” truly means. Consistent presence. Reliable care. Ongoing encouragement.
Safety, Stability, and Belonging
A strong homecare environment does three critical things:
1. Creates Safety
Residents know what to expect. They know who will be there. They know they are supported.
2. Builds Stability
Consistency in routines, staff, and expectations creates confidence.
3. Fosters Belonging
This isn’t temporary housing. It’s home.
And belonging at home creates a ripple effect — strengthening self-esteem, independence, and community involvement.
Inclusion Starts at Home
It’s easy to think of inclusion as something that happens in public spaces — workplaces, parks, community events.
But real inclusion begins long before that.
It begins when someone:
Has control over their living space
Has input in daily decisions
Feels respected and heard
Knows they are valued
When a homecare setup prioritizes dignity and personalization, inclusion becomes a natural extension of everyday life.
As we recognize Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month and the theme “We’re Here All Year,” we invite you to reflect:
How can you create environments — at home, at work, or in your neighborhood — where people feel genuinely safe, supported, and included year-round?
Inclusion doesn’t require grand gestures. It requires consistency.
At Like Our Own Home, we believe the most powerful work doesn’t happen in headlines or hashtags.
It happens in kitchens. In living rooms. In quiet, everyday moments.
Because awareness matters. But belonging begins at home.
